– Si no quieres, no me acompañes…
– Quiero acompañarte.
– No sé cómo va a reaccionar mi madre, ya te aviso.
– Me da igual.
Paso a paso.
– ¿Me querrás siempre?
– Siempre se me hace corto. Más.

– If you don’t want to, don’t come with me.
– I want to go with you.
– I don’t know how my mother is going to react, I’m warning you.
– I don’t care. I only care about you and the boy.
– We don’t know yet if it´s a boy…
– It is a boy, I’m telling you.
– My god… I don’t know what will be of us…
– Don’t worry about it now. Step by step. If we are together everything will be fine, you’ll see.
– Will you love me forever?
– Forever is too short. Longer.

– ¿Tú estás seguro de eso?
– ¿De qué? ¿De lo del trabajo?
– Sí.
– ¡Claro!
– No te rías Antonio…

——————————————————

– Are you sure about that?
– About what? About the job?
– Yes.
– Of course! It´s a great opportunity! I had never been offered something like this before.
– And if it does not make you happier?
– At least I´ll have money to compensate for my sorrows…ha, ha, ha…
– Don´t laugh Antonio… Once you sell your soul, it´s very difficult recover it afterwards. This is not El Corte Inglés…

Me tienes olvidado. Conozco tu luz y tu sombra, tu don, tu pecado. Mírame. Ven.

You have forgotten me. You take me out to walk me around but you don’t even look at me in the eyes. You lament about the few that we are but you reject the cross that saves you. I’m your tradition, your medal on the neck, your flag, your patron. I’m who you want to impose to others, you, who doesn’t kneel down on my feet! I’m who you don’t visit, I’m who you don’t choose, I am the love whom you don’t love. I know all about you. I know your light and your shadow, your gift, your sin. Look at me. Come.

No te cases.

Listen to me. You don’t love her. Don’t make the mistake of marrying her. You don’t love her. You love yourself and you need her. You need her to tell you what you have to do, you need her to help you to be yourself, you need her to be waiting when you get back home, to know that there is someone in the world that loves you. Because you cannot bear being alone, because you can’t bear yourself in front of the mirror, because the silence pierces your soul.

You don’t love her. You only want to survive. Don’t get married. Tomorrow’s pain will be even more horrible that the suffering you are turning your face away from today.

I found her in the newspaper. Juani, the caretaker, had told me:

– Mrs Carmen, buy today’s newspaper, that your daughter appears in it!

A bit incredulous I went to the kiosk and I saw her, on the cover, behind a big headline in bold: «the new laical Spain»
There she was, with a sad look, and a defiant attitude. It looked like she was looking at me and the posters she was carrying were her revenge for all those Sundays of mass in her childhood.

What had happened to you, daughter? When did it happen? In which moment the God who you believed in became your greatest cause of indignation? What did your father and I do wrong? The way back home was so sad, with the newspaper under the arm…
